Lost in Translation

I haven't harped on this that much yet, but sometimes people can be hard to understand, their slang and diction are just off, let alone their accents. One funny event occurred yesterday. I walk into the common room and see that everyone is watching circket. It flashed to commercials very quickly so I didn't really get any of the details. I asked if everyone was rooting for a team. People kinda stared at me and said, you know maybe australia. turns out it was australia vs sri lanka. so i made a mistake. later i was explaining that I just listened to when people cheered and pretended that I understood the game, and someone mentioned, at least your said cheering. I was a little surprised and asked what I had said earlier. Then I realized that rooting has another meaning here. Awkward...for those not with me yet, the closest words americans have is rutting. Not exactly something that comes up while you're watching a game of cricket (it was a short game, only like 7 hours, no i did not watch all of it)
